🎨 Discovering São Paulo’s Artistic Heart: The MASP Museum

Josh, many people don’t consider São Paulo a top tourist destination. What was your first impression of the city’s cultural scene?

I have to say, before I went, I did not care about São Paulo at all. I read on the internet that it is only a place for work. People say it is just somewhere you stop at, with not much for tourists to see. But, in just four hours after I got there, I changed my mind. The MASP Museum, the Museum of Art of São Paulo, made me feel amazed. This place is not a regular museum.

The MASP has a new way to show art. The paintings are not put on walls. They stand on clear frames in rows. This lets you look at the front and back of each painting. You can see details and where these art pieces were before. My friend Miss C studied art history at college. She was very happy to see this. This way of showing art makes people feel close to it.

When you walk from the front to the back of the exhibit room, you go back in time and see the history of art. The museum has art by Van Gogh, Cézanne, Renoir, Monet, Picasso, and many other well-known artists. It really is one of the most beautifully put-together museums I have ever seen. When I went there, they had a great SERP exhibit that looked amazing and made people think. This exhibit made me feel proud to be with the queer community.

What impact did visiting MASP have on your view of São Paulo?

It really changed the way I see things. I walked out feeling full of ideas. I wanted to write or paint someone I did not know. It made me feel alive and set up the rest of my trip in a good way. São Paulo’s art scene should get more attention from people in other countries, and this museum on its own makes you want to go see it.

🍖 A Culinary Revelation: Dinner at Bark & Crust

After such a cultural start, how did you and Miss C experience São Paulo’s food scene?

When we finished at MASP, we were very hungry. We looked up places to eat and chose Bark & Crust. It is a meat house that mixes Brazilian barbecue with American barbecue. The photos online looked so good. I was excited to eat there with Miss C because we could order a lot of food and try many things together.

We did not hold back. We had a T-bone steak, mac and cheese, potato salad, and coleslaw. This might be the best meal I have had this year. The taste of each item was just right. The meat was cooked well. The sides went so well with everything. Our server was friendly and fun. It was like eating with good friends.

Would you recommend Bark & Crust to travelers exploring São Paulo?

Absolutely. You have to go there if you like meat and want a good time. The place, food, and people who help you were all great. We took some food with us because we had too much to eat. It was a great way to finish our first day in the city.

🎨 Street Art and Sweet Surprises: Exploring Beco do Batman

The next day, you visited Beco do Batman. What makes this spot special?

Beco do Batman is a place in São Paulo in the Vila Madalena area. The walls here are full of bright graffiti and street art. You will see pop culture stars, anime people, and many other things. The name comes from a well-known Batman wall picture, but you can find a lot of other types of art here too.

One of my favorite things I saw was a beautiful turtle mural. But really, every wall here stands out. What I like is how the city treats graffiti as real art. This helps turn the neighborhood into a busy place for culture and a spot many people want to see. We got there early, so we had the area mostly to ourselves. That made it feel even more special.

You also discovered a chocolate shop called Mr D nearby. What was that experience like?

That was a nice surprise. We found Mr D by accident. The place had a great feel and everyone inside was full of energy. The staff greeted us with warm smiles. We decided to sit and try a hot chocolate. It tasted like nothing I have had before. They made it with real Brazilian chocolate right there. It was thick, smooth, and packed with flavor.

After that, I do not think I will go back to using those hot chocolate packets. If you plan to visit Beco do Batman, you should stop at Mr D. This place is not easy to find but it is special. It gives your time in São Paulo a nice, sweet feel.

🚶‍♂️ Immersing in History: Free Walking Tour and São Bento Monastery

How did you spend the rest of your time in São Paulo?

We went on a free walking tour in São Paulo’s old downtown. The tours are great because you get to see a lot of history in a short time. There is some culture and local feel in every stop. We saw some churches, walked by markets, and looked at architecture. There, we learned about the city’s food. Shopping traditions were part of what they spoke to us about too.

One thing I liked was going to Santa Tereza Bakery. It is the oldest bakery in São Paulo. It started in 1872. I got to have pao de queijo there. This is a cheese bread people in Brazil eat a lot. It is simple, but it tastes great here. The outside is crispy, and the inside is chewy and cheesy. You should try this snack if you are in São Paulo.

What about the Mosterio de São Bento? What made that visit unique?

The Mosterio de São Bento is a beautiful place where you can see a church and a monastery. The monks there make their own beer and bake bread. When we went, someone played organ music live. That made the room feel special and a bit spooky, but I liked it. You don't see many churches with live music when you walk in. It made the visit feel different in a good way.

🍣 Cultural Fusion in Liberdade: São Paulo’s Japan Town

You ended your trip in the Liberdade neighborhood. What is this area like?

Liberdade is São Paulo’s Japan town. It is one of the liveliest places in the city. There are many Asian restaurants, shops, and signs here. These show how big the Japanese community is in Brazil. In fact, Brazil has the largest Japanese population outside Japan. A lot of them live right here in São Paulo.

I spent two months living in Japan, so I really enjoy things from there. Being in this part of Brazil was exciting for me, as it mixes both cultures in one place. The area is bright, friendly, and the people make you feel at home. It is a great spot to have good Asian food and watch the sunset at the same time.

How did this cultural experience influence your overall impression of São Paulo?

I really feel that São Paulo is a city full of different people and so much to see. You can find all kinds of cultures living together and doing well here. The city is more than a place to do business. It has art, food, stories, and so much life. I think everyone should go to São Paulo at least once.
